Hakanai : Bubbles Sculpture / 2022
︎Liquid soap, Watercolor
Hakanai, is a word not directly translatable to Thai or English. Things are beautiful because they are fleeting, disappearing into nothing. I realized how deep this idea is while I was working on an assignment in the Theory of Colour course.
At first, I just wanted to explore how colors disperse when soap bubbles burst and melt. Yet the bubbles were dense enough to form a three–dimensional sculpture. It is not just a flat picture, but an object that very quickly loses its form. Every stroke or drop of watercolor I paint would dent a hole in the sculpture. It is like carving rather than sculpting.
But I have my foam dispenser at hand, once the mass has lost too much of its intended form, I just add in some more bubbles. At this state, both the processes of deteriorating and creating happen concurrently.
I was just expecting the abstract, impressionist painting type of picture at the end, but in reality, the process itself was the most interesting thing to come out of this project. I recorded videos of the sculptures being created and painted and melt all at the same time. Living forms like plants, fungi, and animals are borrowed, some with seeds or branches left at the end. It was sorrowful not being able to keep the finished artwork in my collection, but surprisingly more memorable than most of the stuff I have created and kept.

「儚い」という言葉は、タイ語にも英語にも直接翻訳できない。ものは儚く、無に消えていくから美しい。色彩理論の課題に取り組んでいるときに、このアイデアがいかに深いものかを実感した。
最初は、泡がはじけたり溶けたりするときに色がどのように分散するかを調べたかっただけだ。それでも、泡は三次元の彫刻を形成するのに十分な密度でした。それは単なる平面図ではなく、すぐに形を失うオブジェクトです。私が描く水彩画をつけるごとに、彫刻が凹んでいく。SculptingというよりCarvingなのだ。
といっても、泡ディスペンサーは手元にはある。望ましい形を失いすぎたら、泡を追加するだけで良い。その瞬間に、劣化と作成の両方の課程が同時に発生する。
最後に抽象的で印象派の絵画のような絵を期待していたが、実際には、課程自体がこのプロジェクトから得られる最も興味深いものだった。彫刻が作成され、塗装され、同時にすべてが溶ける様子を記録した。植物、菌類、動物などの生き物の形を借りてき、最後に種や枝を残したものもある。完成した作品を残せなかったのは残念だが、私が作成して保存したほとんどの作品よりも驚くほど記憶に残っているものだった。
